ITINERARY

Day 1 - Arrival
Pickup from Sarajevo at 10:00, transfer approx 3 hours to base camp, on the banks of the River Tara. Kev & Tom will be there to greet you and give a welcome brief. You can spend a few hours getting acquainted with your new landscape and fellow expedition members before evening dinner and relax around the fire-pit. Hot (wood fired) showers and storage are available. Please note, at some point during the drive you will lose signal and there is no connection at base camp or anywhere in Tara Canyon. Time to disconnect. |
|
Day 2 - Durmitor National Park
After breakfast we will take a stunning drive 3 hours through Durmitor National Park to Slijivansko, our start point for the River Tara. We will paddle 2-3 hours to Dragan's Farm, where we will pitch tents for the night. A real insight into remote, rural Montenegrin life. |
|
Day 3 - Into The Tara Canyon
After a camp breakfast, we set off for our second day on the Tara. With the clear flowing water beneath us, 20km will be a cruise and we will have plenty of time to stop, swim, play and soak in the awe-inspiring landscape around us. We'll find a spot on the riverbank, miles away from anywhere for a proper wild camp. |
|
Day 5 - The Rafting Section
Today we tackle the most challenging of the rapids, the 13km rafting section all the way to the Montenegro/Bosnia border. The short distance gives us plenty of time to stop, scout and plan our lines through these exciting rapids. Or maybe you'd rather just hop in the raft? Once we reach the border, we'll transfer back to base camp and for one last night, have a home cooked meal and regale our river stories around the fire. |

What sup experience and fitness is required?
This is not for beginners, some experience paddling Class II rapids on a SUP is required. And ability to comfortably paddle 10km. A lesson or two with a whitewater SUP coach beforehand would be invaluable. The ability to swim and quickly self-rescue is essential. We've started to piece together a list of recommended coaches here

What are the river and rapids like?
The river flows at a lovely pace, meaning we can cover distance easily. It's (usually) crystal clear and cool (around 12C water temp). The rapids range from mostly class I and II, then on the final day we will be tackling three class III rapids (optional). We will always stop and check the larger rapids before paddling to ensure safe lines, and paddlers will have the options to walk around or hop into the raft.
what's the weather like?
We're usually in Montenegro in September when days range from 18-28C and nights fall down to 8-15C. We may get a day or two of rain.
what wildlife is in the tara canyon?
Eurasian Brown Bears, Lynx and Wolves are present in the canyon, but are extremely rare to see. More commonly spotted are Kingfishers, Golden Eagles and Alpine Chamois - a species of wild goat.
any biting bugs?
Usual European bugs - ticks, mosquitoes, midges and horseflies - but by September these are very minimal. Kev didn't get a single bite in 2024 or 2025. Bring repellent and anti-histamines if you're very sensitive.
do i need cash?
Yes, bring some euros for base camp. There is no signal so card payments aren't possible for any food/drink extras you may purchase.
